Introduction to Mycology: Field Study
The Introduction to Mycology class is hosted by The Birmingham Botanical Gardens at Oak Mountain State Park! This is a public event, with Instructor Juan Luis Mata, PhD leading the class.
"The study of fungi is an immense discipline. This is a field-based class focusing on macrofungi, which include any type of fungal reproductive structure that is evident to the naked eye. After an initial introduction to fungi, and how to recognize and collect them, we will walk in the wooded areas of Oak Mountain State Park to find fresh specimens. Later, we will gather to assort, describe, and identify our collections. You will learn characteristics and features of major groups and interesting taxa. You are encouraged to bring specimens you have collected at home or elsewhere, to increase our showing. The class will conclude with remarks on macrofungal ecology, diversity, importance, and useful tips." - Birmingham Botanical Gardens
