Free Fishing Day – A Great Time To Connect With Your Family

Discover just how much fun fishing can be when you do it together. No activity can bond a family together quite like fishing. It's a great way for families to have fun, create new memories and spend time together. Check out these events planned for Alabama’s Free Fishing Day on June 7:

Kid's All-American Fishing Derby -- A fishing derby for children ages five through twelve in celebration of National Fishing and Boating Week. Activities include a casting contest, fishing, lunch, and an awards ceremony. Participants should bring their own fishing gear and catfish bait. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Bankhead National Forest Work Center (Lookout Tower), Highway 33 North between Moulton and Double Springs. Contact Allison Cochran at (205) 489-5111.

9th Annual Youth Fishing Tournament -- Youth Fishing Tournament available to Children 15 years and younger, at the pond on Lowndes County Wildlife Management Area near White Hall from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Prizes will be awarded. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information call (334) 872-9554

Conecuh Youth Fishing Derby -- Events include a fishing derby, casting contests, informational booths, educational demonstrations, and lunch. This event is free for youth up to age 16 if supervised by parents or guardians. Held at Open Pond in Andalusia, the events begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 1p.m. For more information contact Alex Boldog at (334) 222-2555.

Tuskegee Youth Fishing Derby – Begins at 7:30 a.m. and continues until 1 p.m. at Big Pond in Tuskegee. Events include a fishing derby, casting contests, informational booths, educational demonstrations, and lunch. This event is free for youth up to age 16 if supervised by parents or guardians. Shoal Creek Youth Fishing Derby – At Coleman Lake in Heflin from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Events include a fishing derby, casting contests, informational booths, educational demonstrations, and lunch. This event is free for youth up to age 16 if supervised by parents or guardians. Call Jeff Gardner at (256) 463-2272 for more information.

Huntsville Youth Fishing Rodeo – For youth through ages 6-12 accompanied by an adult from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at Brahan Park. Contact Lagina Smith for information at (256) 883-3728.

Pratt Park Kids’ Fishin’ Fest – In Prattville’s Pratt Park from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. for youth ages 5 through 15 that are accompanied by an adult. For more information call Denise Corley at (334) 361-3640.-more-

Pell City Kids’ Fishing Day – At Pell City Park from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. for youth ages 5 to 15, accompanied by an adult. Contact Betty Gardner at (205) 338-9713.

Alexander City’s Kids’ Fishing Fun Day – Sponsored by Alex City Parks and Recreation from 8 a.m. until noon. All youth age 5 through 15 that are accompanied by an adult are invited to participate. Call Cara Tidwell at (256) 329-6736.

Pike County Lake Kids’ Fishing – Held at Pike County Public Fishing Lake near Troy. All youth ages 15 and younger who are accompanied by an adult may participate. Call Mike Newman for information at (334) 347-9460.

Wheeler State Park Kids’ Fishing Day – From 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Joe Wheeler State Park in Lauderdale County.  For youth ages 15 and younger with accompanying adult. Call Judy Mason or Tim Haney at (256) 247-5466.

These special fishing events provide opportunities for families and friends to share fun and quality time together while learning about one of our nation's favorite pastimes -- so get the family involved.
