June 5-13 is National Fishing and Boating Week

Now that the weather has warmed up, maybe it’s time to take the boat out for a trip or get reacquainted with that favorite fishing spot. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) and the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF) are encouraging people to partake in recreational activities during National Fishing and Boating Week, June 5-13. The mission of National Fishing and Boating Week (NFBW) is to raise awareness of the opportunities, benefits, and values associated with boating and fishing participation and stewardship of aquatic resources. The message incorporates the theme of the Water Works Wonders™ national advertising campaign – time spent on the water connects people.

Recreational boating and fishing are America’s favorite sporting activities, with more than 50 million people participating every year - more than play golf and tennis combined. During NFBW, hundreds of communities across the country will host fishing and boating events designed to give families the opportunity to participate in these great pastimes. While millions already take part in these activities, this is also an opportunity to introduce others.

Participation not only connects people with nature, it also helps to fund the management and conservation of local aquatic environments. The money that comes from fishing licenses and special taxes on fishing equipment and motorboat fuel funds an average of 83 percent of state fisheries management budgets. These funds ensure that fishery resources are well-managed, accessible and conserved for future generations to enjoy.

NFBW is administered by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation in partnership with the National Fishing and Boating Week Steering Committee. The RBFF is a government-funded, nonprofit organization established in 1998 to increase participation in recreational angling and boating, thereby increasing public awareness and appreciation of the need for protecting, conserving, and restoring America’s aquatic natural resources. Here are some boating and fishing facts and figures:

 Recreational boating is one of the most popular forms of family recreation:

  • More than 71 million Americans participated in recreational boating in 2002.
  • Over 17 million boats were owned across the U.S. in 2002.
  • It is estimated that more than 800,000 boats were sold in 2002.
  • Over $30 billion was spent at retail outlets during 2002 for new and used boats, motors and engines, trailers, accessories and other associated costs.
  • 41% of fiberglass and aluminum fishing boat owners are adults with children 18 years old and younger.
  • Boat owners said they started boating at 12 - 14 years of age.
  • About one-half of boat owners were brought into boating by their parents.
  • Another one-third of boat owners began boating with friends or a friend's family.

Fishing is one of America's favorite outdoor recreational pastimes:

  • Of the U.S. population, ages 16 and older, over 34 million go fishing. This represents 16 percent of the population.
  • In addition, there are almost 17 million youth anglers.
  • Recreational anglers, ages 16 and older, spend over $41 billion a year to fish. This has tremendous economic impacts:
    • $116.1 billion in industry output;
    • $30.1 billion in salaries and wages;
    • $2.4 billion in state income and sales taxes;
    • $4.9 billion in Federal income taxes; and
    • 1.1 million jobs (full- and part-time)
  • Recreational anglers, ages 16 and older, spend 557 million days fishing on 437 million trips a year. Of the days spent fishing, 83 percent are in freshwater and 16 percent are in saltwater.
  • The average angler, age 16 and older, spends $1,219 to fish in a year's time.
  • Approximately 59 percent of all anglers 16 years and older live in urban areas and 41 percent live in rural communities.
  • Over a year, the average angler 16 years and older spends $135 for fishing tackle and other equipment; $328 for trip-related goods and services; and $103 for transportation.
  • Freshwater fishing expenditures by anglers, 16 years and older, are estimated at $26.5 billion and saltwater fishing expenditures estimated $11.3 billion.
