Prescribed Fire Planned at Oak Mountain and Wind Creek State Parks

The Alabama State Parks Division, in cooperation with local fire departments and the Alabama Forestry Commission, will conduct prescribed burns at Oak Mountain State Park and Wind Creek State Park between February 26 and March 13, 2014, weather permitting. The planned burns will range in size from four acres to 36 acres. Every effort will be made to ensure safety and proper smoke management during this period.
The upcoming prescribed burns will eliminate pine straw in the campground at Wind Creek, and eliminate sweet-gum and pine straw on the golf course rough and in the Archery Park at Oak Mountain. Prescribed burns also help to fuel the growth of wildlife food sources such as native grasses, wildflowers and forbs.
