Prescribed Burns Planned for Lakepoint and Chewacla State Parks

Alabama State Parks personnel will conduct several prescribed burns within Chewacla State Park in Auburn, Ala., and along Lakepoint Drive/Old Highway 165 within Lakepoint State Park in Eufaula, Ala., from mid-February to the end of March, weather permitting. Every effort is being made to ensure safety and proper smoke management during these burns. This project will be in compliance with permits from the Alabama Forestry Commission, and the Auburn and Eufaula Fire Departments.
Prescribed fire is an effective way to reduce wildfire risk, maintain forest ecosystem health and enhance wildlife habitat. Animals such as deer, turkey and quail flourish in areas that burned because fire removes dead plant material and exposes the ground to sunshine.  Lush vegetation returns beginning in early spring that provides forage, grazing, seeds and insects for food.
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama’s natural resources through five divisions:  Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries.  To learn more about ADCNR, visit .
