Cheaha State Park

Come hike and explore the fascinating world of lichens and the surprising roles these symbiotic organisms play in our world with our Interpretive Team and Curtis Hansen of Auburn University. Estimated to cover nearly 8% of the earth’s land surface, these organisms are largely unknown to most people even though they are found all around us. We will introduce the basics of lichen growth forms, habitats, functions and morphology as we hike along the trail. Participants will learn how to identify the major lichen growth forms and be shown basic collecting techniques to assist them in discovering these interesting organisms for themselves. Bring a hand lens and comfortable walking shoes or boots as we hike to the Rock Garden.
